Pat Puder — Leaded Stained Glass

pud7.jpg Pat Puder learned how to make leaded stained glass from her father, William R. Puder, in the seventies and has been doing stained glass professionally since her graduation in Fine Arts from U.C.S.C. in 1983. Since then, she has learned diverse ways of working with glass including painting, sand carving, slumping and fusing glass, and making glass molds. She enjoys the challenge of trying out and combining different glass techniques and the gem-like colors of the glass itself. The inspiration for her pieces comes from nature, life drawing, and the art of other cultures and eras. pud8.jpg

pud9.jpgSince ‘Clearly Beautiful’ clearly describes artist Patricia Puder’s stained glass work. It’s no big surprise that she has named her business ‘Clearly Beautiful Stained Glass’. The name, Puder, might be familiar to longtime Saratoga residents. The talent of William Puder’s stained–glass artistry, Patricia’s father, is visible at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Saratoga.

Patricia began her work in her home and eventually moved her studio to 14519 Big Basin Way where she’s worked for the past three years. Though now avid in her field, she didn’t initially intend to pursue stained glass. “I learned about leaded stained glass from my father, though at first I never thought I would get into the business.”

Patricia’s talents have so far been used in private homes for entry ways, skylights, cabinet doors, and closet doors. Her work is also featured at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church along with her father’s work.

“I’ve done a memorial window for the church for a young Saratoga boy who died while jogging. The work reflects his favorite saying about an eagle striving for higher goals. The window shows an eagle flying up towards the mountains and the sun.” pud10.jpg

Patricia attributes much of her local success to her mother, Helen Puder who helped her set up the Saratoga studio and coordinated the business end of Clearly Beautiful Stained Glass: for the first year–and–a–half.

“My mother was a partner when I opened the studio, though now she has gone back to working full–time elsewhere. Of course my husband, Michael Simpson, is very supportive of my effort and is very appreciative of my talent.”
